Follow Friday
I decided today, since it is Friday, that I should probably write something. Why? No reason, just feel that it is a good thing to do. The sun is shining and it feels like spring outside… so why not write about something that I have been thinking about since early this morning?
Now, before I go further, I need to qualify something – I have been using Twitter for some time now, and have mixed feelings about the sudden mad popularity of it in mainstream media. I don’t know how it will all play out, and I am not particularly interested, beyond the fact that the service predictably will soon have paid premium accounts and Facebook is trying to take it over. Such is the way of things. I do find some of the little blips that come up through Twitter interesting/ fascinating and one concept that started as a ‘game’ I found myself thinking a lot about today. It’s called #followfriday. The title “#followfriday” allows people to search more easily and encourages people to follow other people that are being recommended. It took me awhile to figure that out. When you only have 140 to microblog it’s hard to get anything more than a condensed url to deal with but that’s what I discovered about it (maybe there’s more to it, I don’t know).
So, it got me to thinking about how that same principle can be applied here. I came up with “my Friday five”. First, I chose five random new people who just joined Gaia today, and I would like to highlight their profiles. Why not pop over to their page and give them some love? Say Hi and Welcome to Gaia? That’s what I’m going to do. Then, I chose five of my existing friends from my network, and I will do the same. This was also done randomly and is not meant to be anything other than a chance to show my appreciation for who they are.
So, without any further adieu, here are My Friday Friend Follow with the New Five:

What a sweet Idea, just been on my tour scattering seeds as I go. I haven't got involved with the twitter hype, already with Gaia and facebook I spend a lot of time online. So many interesting people wandering through cyberspace! Thanks for sharing with us.
great - I am glad to hear that the seeds are flying ;-) yes, I understand what you are saying about being online alot. I've been on Twitter for awhile now (before the crazy hype). For me, it's just another tool for connecting with people. I am happy to be able to use the idea here, although I could easily do a friend follow Monday to Sunday.
:-)
Hello Leigh-Anne,
Your thoughts are beautiful, and I hope this encourages many of us old timers to follow up on such a righteous movement<B
Things of this nature has been brought to my attention on a one to one basis, now and again, but to have this made into a blog, with such a sweet lovable touch, is certainly a “right on - high five,” posting.
Loving your spirit there, gal friend, and God speed…xo
Hi Mum - thank you! I am happy that you enjoyed this blog. I have often spent hours 'behind the scenes' greeting new members of Gaia. It's been one of my favorite things to do as an ambassador. The problem has been that well, there are so many, and I could never touch base with everyone (nor did I feel that I should be)… when the idea of follow friday was explained to me - it didn't take long for me to realize how it could nicely solve/ resolve my hope to connect with, and connect others in a fun and friendly way. I like being able to do this in a random kind of way (no preferential treatment really) - and I also like being able to highlight some of my long time network. I don't get to tell people how much I appreciate them and value the connection we've made here on Gaia. To me, these two things just go hand in hand with the My Friend Follow. Spreading the love - there can never be too much of that :-) I am really looking forward to more Friend Follow days, and maybe others doing the same. It's a really nice way to meet people!
much love to you my friend, all the very best!
xo
This is a beautiful idea, Leigh-Anne. Thank you so much, for this dear post and for your lovely greeting-energy. (Saying hello to newcomers is one of my favorite things, too. Remember what it was like to first find this community? :)
You are very welcome Siona. I do remember the very first day I arrived here. It was almost exactly three years ago (coming up soon on the 15th). I remember being so excited and overwhelmed when I first joined here,
there was just so much to explore back then, and even more so now. I think the greetings are really important, and in a lot of ways set Gaia apart from other social networking sites. The responses from new members is most often the same - surprise that someone took the time to greet them and say hello. In the end, it's such a simple thing to do, to say hello and encourage others to do the same. It can really make someone's day to receive a note hello.
